VMAs Draw 8.4 Million Viewers, Best Since 2015 and Up 51% From Last Year
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards posted their largest audience in 11 years, boosted by an NFL overrun and a star-studded lineup.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards averaged a combined 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV on Sunday night, a 51% increase from last year's telecast and the show's best same-day audience since 2015, according to Nielsen Live+same day fast nationals.
The surge marks a major turnaround for the long-running awards show, which has faced declining ratings in recent years. The event was likely aided by an NFL football overrun: the Baltimore Ravens' win over the Dallas Cowboys ran late, pushing the VMAs' start time on CBS to 7:51 p.m. ET, several minutes past its scheduled slot.
The 8.43 million figure includes the primary simulcast on CBS and MTV plus an encore on MTV. In an apples-to-apples comparison, last year's show—which also aired on CBS, MTV, and a later MTV encore—drew only 5.60 million total viewers.
Individually, CBS averaged 7.61 million viewers, up 52% from 5.00 million in 2025. MTV's simulcast pulled in 686,000 viewers (up 40% from 481,000), while the MTV encore added another 142,000 (up 31% from 108,000).
The demographic gains were equally strong. Among adults 25-54, the show averaged 3.11 million viewers—the most since 2019 and a 34% jump from last year's 2.32 million. In adults 18-49, the telecast drew 2.66 million, the best since 2018 and up 32% from 2.02 million. Adults 18-34 viewership reached 1.09 million, the highest since 2020 and a 46% increase from 751,000 last year.
CBS also reported significant social media engagement: 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views, up 8% from 2025.
The show itself featured a high-profile opening performance from Madonna—her first VMAs appearance in 23 years—alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Taylor Swift won video of the year, took the artist director award, and premiered her new music video for "Patient Zero." Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, and tributes were held for Dolly Parton and George Michael.
Other performers included GENER8ION, Gunna, Kacey Musgraves, Lisa, Raye, Shaboozey, Sienna Spiro, Sombr, Teddy Swims, and Yung Lean. Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony.
Production credits list Gunpowder & Sky as the production company, with Van Toffler as producer. Executive producers were Jesse Ignjatovic, Barb Bialkowski, Bruce Gillmer, Barry Barclay, and Floris Bauer. Melanie Block served as co-executive producer and Gary Lanvy as co-producer. Snoop Dogg was an executive producer alongside producers Sara Ramaker and Jasmin Ratansi, with Jen Proctor as executive talent producer.
The ratings are based on fast national data and may shift slightly when final figures are released, but the initial numbers suggest a significant rebound for the MTV franchise—one that may have been fueled as much by a prime football lead-in as by the evening's star power.
