Man Seriously Injured After Entering Tiger Enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
South Yorkshire Police say the tigers remained inside the enclosure and there was no danger to the wider public.
YORKSHIRE, England — A man sustained serious injuries Saturday afternoon after entering the tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster, officials said.
South Yorkshire Police responded to the incident at around 1:35 p.m. local time. "The tigers remained inside the enclosure and there was no danger to the wider public," the force said in a statement.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances, an air ambulance, and a doctor to the scene. The victim's condition was initially described as critical but stable. The identity of the injured man has not been released.
"We are working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened," the wildlife park said in a statement on its website.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, with its "Land of the Tigers" attraction launching in 2011. The two-acre reserve houses endangered Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, and features a 300-meter raised walkway that allows visitors to observe the animals through woodland and grassland areas.
Authorities have not released details about how the man bypassed the enclosure's barriers. The incident is under investigation by South Yorkshire Police in partnership with the wildlife park.
This is the latest in a series of incidents at UK wildlife attractions this year, prompting renewed calls for enhanced safety barriers at animal enclosures.
