Shane Beamer announces indefinite suspension for Dylan Stewart
Junior defensive end Dylan Stewart will not play against Kentucky, and his future beyond this week will be decided in the next day or so.
South Carolina defensive end Dylan Stewart has been suspended from the team indefinitely, head coach Shane Beamer announced Sunday after South Carolina’s game at Alabama.
The junior will not play against Kentucky, Beamer said, and his status beyond that game will be decided within the next day or so.
“There’s a standard of how we do things in our program and that was not it last night,” Beamer said. He called the punch “unacceptable” but said “it’s some of the other stuff” that fell short of program expectations. “Accountability is a core value in this program and we are all accountable to the standard.”
When asked to clarify what “the other stuff” involved, Beamer declined to elaborate. “That’s between us,” he said.
During the game in Tuscaloosa, Jordan Kaye of The State posted video showing Stewart refusing to exit the field when Julian Walker was sent onto the field. Beamer acknowledged the heated sideline exchange.
“It gets heated down there. Dylan and a coach — players and coaches — there’s intense conversations and things that happen during games,” Beamer said. “We’re going to hold guys accountable for things. That’s what we’re doing here.”
Stewart missed the first two games of the season as he continued to recover from a back injury sustained in 2025. According to Pro Football Focus, he has played 43 snaps this season, 29 of them at Alabama, and has been credited with one tackle and five quarterback hurries.
In his post-game press conference, Beamer was asked about a first-half confrontation with Stewart that was caught by ESPN cameras. “We’re both fiery guys and it’s a fiery, competitive environment,” Beamer said. “That’s what being in the arena is like.”
Beamer said he will make a decision on Stewart’s future beyond this week in the next day or so. For now, the suspension is indefinite and Stewart will not play against Kentucky.
