PITTSBURGH, PA. — A 39-year-old woman has become the sixth person to die from measles in Pennsylvania this year, health officials confirmed Sunday, marking the state's largest measles outbreak in decades. The deceased, who had not been vaccinated, was among 127 confirmed cases linked to four counties where vaccination rates have fallen below the 95 percent threshold needed for herd immunity.

The outbreak, which began in August, has been concentrated in Allegheny, Butler, Lawrence, and Erie counties, all of which report vaccination rates below 85 percent in at least one school district. Dr. Debra Gellerman, the state's deputy secretary for health protection, said the virus is spreading primarily through interconnected social and religious communities with historically low vaccine uptake.

"We are seeing exactly what we feared," Dr. Gellerman said. "When vaccination rates drop below 90 percent, measles — one of the most contagious viruses known to medicine — finds vulnerable pockets. This is not a political issue; it is a public health emergency."

The last measles death in Pennsylvania prior to this outbreak was in 2019. Nationally, the CDC reports 327 confirmed measles cases as of October 10, with the majority concentrated in pockets across 21 states. The virus, which is 93 percent effective at preventing infection when the MMR vaccine is administered in two doses, has a 99 percent fatality rate for complications among unvaccinated individuals over 30.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has activated mobile vaccination units in the affected counties and is working with community leaders to address vaccine hesitancy. The state has not implemented a mandatory vaccination order, citing ongoing community resistance.
