Multiple Injured, Shooter Dead After Attack at Oregon Elementary School

BEND, Ore. — Multiple people were injured and a suspected shooter is dead after an attack at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, according to police. The incident, which unfolded Thursday morning, sent children scrambling as officers responded to reports of an active shooter on campus.

Police say the suspect — identified by law enforcement sources as a 29-year-old man whose name has not been publicly released — entered the school through a side door shortly before 9 a.m. local time. Officers from the Bend Police Department arrived on scene within three minutes and encountered the suspect in a hallway. The suspect was shot and killed by police; no officers were injured.

At least two children were taken to St. Charles Medical Center with gunshot wounds, hospital officials confirmed. One child was listed in critical condition, the other stable. A teacher suffered minor injuries during the evacuation.

"This is every parent's worst nightmare," Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said at a press conference. "Our focus right now is on the victims and their families, and on understanding how this happened."

The FBI has opened a parallel investigation, standard procedure for mass casualty incidents involving schools. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is tracing the weapon used.

Oregon has experienced six school shootings since 2020, including the 2022 Umpqua Community College attack that left nine dead. According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, there have been 86 school shooting incidents in the United States so far in 2026, consistent with the annual average of roughly 100 since 2021.

Silver Rail Elementary, part of the Bend-La Pine School District, will remain closed for the remainder of the week. Grief counselors have been dispatched to the district.
