Five quarterback trades the Giants could make after Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury

The New York Giants lost quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season after he suffered a knee injury in the first quarter of a 28-6 Week 2 loss to the Rams, forcing Jameis Winston into the starting role before Week 3.

Winston, a former No. 1 overall pick, recently signed a two-year, $13 million extension, but his skill set differs from Dart's. If he struggles, head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen could begin looking for a mobile or familiar quarterback, according to CBS Sports.

Ravens backup Tyler Huntley may be the most logical target. Huntley spent four seasons under Harbaugh in Baltimore, started 12 games, and appeared in a wild-card playoff game in January 2023. Giants staffer Greg Roman was Huntley's offensive coordinator for three of those seasons, which could speed his transition to Matt Nagy's offense.

Baltimore might resist moving Huntley because of Lamar Jackson's injury history, though the Ravens kept rookie Joe Fagano on the roster, leaving open the possibility of a deal at the right price.

Chiefs quarterback Justin Fields would return to the New York market after being traded from the Jets to Kansas City in March. The Chiefs added Fields as insurance while Patrick Mahomes recovered, but Mahomes has looked like himself through two weeks, and rookie Garrett Nussmeier gives Kansas City another backup option.

Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy coached Fields during his rookie year with the Bears in 2021, a connection that could make the fit easier if Kansas City is willing to move him.

Titans backup Mitchell Trubisky also has Nagy ties. Trubisky went 25-13 with Nagy in Chicago and led the Bears to an 11-3 record and a playoff berth in 2018. Tennessee plays the Giants this week, so any deal likely would wait until after the game, giving New York another week to evaluate Winston.

Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson requested a trade earlier this offseason and won the backup job, but Indianapolis has Riley Leonard behind starter. Richardson was the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, and because the Colts did not pick up his fifth-year option, his rookie contract expires after the 2026 season. Trading him now would return value before he can leave in free agency.

Bengals backup Joe Flacco, 41, would reunite with Harbaugh, his head coach in Baltimore for 11 seasons and during the Ravens' Super Bowl win in 2012. Flacco joined Cincinnati on Oct. 7 last season, threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns on Oct. 12, and averaged 272.7 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in six starts.

Cincinnati may be reluctant to part with Flacco because of Joe Burrow's injury history, but the two front offices worked together on the April trade that sent Dexter Lawrence to Cincinnati. Other quarterbacks who could be available include J.J. McCarthy and Mac Jones, while free agents Jimmy Garoppolo and Russell Wilson appear unlikely to be clear upgrades.

New York enters Week 3 at 1-1, and whether the answer is Winston or a trade, the Giants have a narrow window to keep their season from sliding further.
